BiT Offers Training on Kaizen Implementation

Bahirdar Institute of Technology (BiT), Office of Institutional Transformation and Quality Assurance has organized and conducted training on Kaizen implementation for Kaizen team members in the institute for three days ( from  31 December 2013,  to 03 January 2014).  Six major kaizen teams (Laboratory and workshop, Registrar, Property administration, students’ cafeteria and dormitory, Library and BiT general service kaizen teams) and eleven sub-kaizen teams have established in the institute to implement the kaizen principles in their respective departments or sections. More than thirty kaizen team members have participated in this training.

 

The major purpose of the training is to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of teaching-learning process, research and community service in the Bahirdar institute of technology. Moreover, the following are the specific purposes of this kaizen training:

*  To create awareness on kaizen concept and meaning for BiT kaizen team members

*  To introduce quality and productivity for BiT kaizen team members.

*  To enable trainees to implement and sustain the 5S.

*  To enable trainees to implement the seven wastes.
*  To create a better work environment in BiT not only through physical changes but also mainly focusing on attitude change on working culture of everyone in the institute.

 

Institutional Transformation and Quality Assurance office in BiT has prepared Kaizen implementation manual in Amharic language. In this kaizen implementation manual, the major activities of each kaizen teams in different departments and sections have listed out for easy implementation of the kaizen principles. The manuals have distributed to the kaizen team members before conducting the training.

 

Director for Institutional Transformation and Quality Assurance Office, Dr. Amare Matebu has conducted the kaizen implementation training for three days to those kaizen team members. In the first day, he has overviewed globalization effect, concept and meaning of kaizen as well as the necessity of kaizen implementation in the Bahirdar institute of technology. He explained that Kaizen is one of the major management philosophies and tools that enable education institutes like BiT to compete with their competitors. Kaizen is the Japanese word meaning change for better. Kaizen is a culture of sustained continuous improvement focusing on eliminating waste in all system and processes of an organization. Kaizen is a combination of both quality and productivity. Kaizen can be implemented everywhere, every time and by everyone. He emphasized that everyone in the institute should actively participate in kaizen implementation.

 

In day two training, Dr. Amare has introduced the basic characteristics of kaizen, 5s with its implementation procedures and seven wastes to the participants. In the last day, participants have become aware about their major tasks with regard to kaizen implementation in their respective departments or sections.

 

Finally, participants have expressed their interest to implement kaizen in their respective departments and sections.  The participants have also requested top management of the Bahirdar institute of technology to show their commitment to kaizen implementation. In this regard, Ato Fanta deputy managing director of the institute has explained the commitment of the institute to implement kaizen. At the end, Dr. Amare has informed the participants to prepare the improvement projects in their respective kaizen teams and submit within two weeks from the last day of training.
