Public Lecture on Quality Engineering and Management

Any Industry is an assembly of 4Ms such as: Material, Machines, and Methods guided by Men.The non-optimal use of resources by industries ultimately leads to their depletion. At such critical instances, an Industrial Engineer aids the industry to deploy scientific tools and innovative methods of optimally utilizing such scarce resources and eventually simplify human welfare. The ultimate goal of the Production Systems Engineering Chair in BIT is therefore to be a center of excellence for planning, designing, and implementing state-of-the-art production systems through quality teaching-learning, research, and community service deliverables leading to the gateway of zero-defect production systems in Ethiopian industries. Likewise, the School of Research and Graduate Studies organizes public lectures, workshops, forums, and conferences so as to disseminate up-to-date technologies and philosophies to both the internal and external communities of the institute. In this regard, the philosophical and practical values of ‘Quality Engineering & Management’ have the leading role in realizing defect-free industries and in exceeding current customer requirements. The Production Systems Engineering Chair in collaboration with the School of Research and Graduate Studies organized a public lecture on April 17, 2015 in order to enlighten staffs and
students on the significance of quality-related philosophies and practices in accelerating Ethiopia’s industrial transformation.

The two lectures that were delivered are:
1. State-of-the-art of Quality Engineering: Opportunities for and Challenges of Ethiopian Industries in its Philosophical and Practical Perspectives – By Prof. Dr. Menberu Lulu, who has a 30-year post Ph.D. experience in teaching, research, & international consulting in different Universities, corporations, and agencies in U.S.A that include Allied Signal, NASA-Huntsville, Motorola, and others. He also published widely in refereed journals in the areas of Quality Engineering and Production Systems Simulation; and
2. The Role of Industrial Engineers in Quality Deployment & improvement for Accelerating Industrial Transformation in Ethiopia; Case: Kaizen Implementation in Ethiopia – By Mr. Solomon Mengistu, an assistant professor and who worked as Deputy Director General of Ethiopian Kaizen Institute and he is now a practitioner for successful deployment of Kaizen philosophy for Quality and Productivity improvement of various industries in Ethiopia. The public lecture was attended by Dr. Nigus Gabye, Scientific Director of BiT, Assistant Profesor Yonas Mitiku, Deputy Scientific Director of BiT, Dr. Sisay Geremew, Managing Director of BiT, Ato Teshome Bekele, Dean for the Faculty of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, Chair holders, other BiT’s management bodies, staffs, and students. Participants were happy with the event and stated that they acquired better understanding of the uses and applications of quality engineering and management concepts and eventually suggested such events to have continuity.
