System Development as the Chair and the Department of Software Engineering as a program under the chair have a mission to develop professionals who can produce high-quality, cutting-edge, and cost-effective software systems. The chair is one of the Computing Faculty focal organs and empowered functional units in the academic structure of Bahir Dar Institute of Technology, and Bahir Dar University, in General. The Department of Software Engineering provides a forward-thinking approach in an inclusive environment that encourages students to become pioneers in the field by developing in-depth knowledge through the hands-on design of innovative products. The chair focuses on solving real-world problems by creating usable, reliable, and efficient software.  In real-world circumstances, our curriculum triumphs on team-based activities with collaboration and the design process, and the courses include engineering, business, computing science, and project management. Students receive mentorship to become world-class engineers and conduct world-class research by closely collaborating with faculty and industry. Students work tirelessly to reach the finish line because the knowledge they gain here prepares them for a bright future ahead.  Our graduates are successful problem-solvers working for leading research and project laboratories.

The chair performs and serves the faculty and Institute, in general, customers by having defined due and responsibility, which is mentioned in the university legislation. The chair administers and is responsible for students’ study of engineering principles, computer science algorithm development, and programming, which equips students with the required skills to compete in the ever-challenging job market. Our students' theoretical and practical skills, gained through the software engineering program, position them high on any job candidate list because they have an in-depth mixture of foundational theory in engineering science, engineering design, math, and program developing skills. As a wide range of industries depends on this profession to operate their businesses, our graduates power up in their future as software engineers by gaining technical knowledge and skills in how to design, develop, maintain, test, and evaluate the software. Therefore, you all are welcome to the System Development Chair and you will gain valuable information and directives about the program and the chair. Over the past years, the chair has grown to a complement of more than 20 regular chair staff and 130+ faculty staff members. We have expanded into Software graduates as a discipline, offering undergraduate programs in software engineering. Students give use us countless reasons to be proud.

System Development Chair give:Software Engineering as Bachelor’s and Master’s levels,

Three labs: Namely: Software Testing and Quality Assurance, System Development, and Postgraduate lab.

Sincerely,

Gebeyehu Belay (Dr. of Eng.) Associate Professor,

Greetings and welcome to the web page of programing and computing chair of computing faculty at Bahir Dar University. We are a group of more than 4 department who work together with undergraduate and graduate trainees as well as dedicated research to advance our scientific, educational and community service goals. Our mission is to advance human understanding of Computing, both through teaching and research. In teaching, our mission is to educate our students so that they have the fundamental knowledge, and analyze variety of problems, generate appropriate algorithmic solutions and solve problems using the functional, object-oriented and logic programming paradigm.

We are passionate and committed to the education of software engineers, computer scientist, IT engineers and Information System expert, to research, and to the community and our objectives are to provide outstanding education in a student-oriented university, to be a center of excellence in research, and to reach out to the community and the professions. We welcome students who want to make a super in their life with commitment, dedication and hard work.

We are working to become a center of excellence by categorizing the faculty into sub specific Chair units. Programing and computing chair is one of the chair unit in the faculty of computing. Students interested in computer programming may earn an associate's or bachelor's degree in a field such as computer science, information technology, information systems and Software engineering. Programming chair unit’s focus on helping students develop an understanding of operating systems, basic programming and data structure algorithms, object oriented programming and technologies and parallel processing & embedded systems. Our educational objectives are to develop problem-solving skills to formalize general problem statements into precise algorithmic solutions, to effectively develop, test, and debug a program using various software tools, to become proficient programmers and to develop experience conducting research and completing large projects.

Center for research and community Service unit has been established under the BIT to facilitate and administer research and community service activities conducted by our university. Programing chair unit has been actively encouraging research and community service activities. Students or academic staff may propose a community service project in a formal proposal document and also external organization may approach the faculty with project idea to seek support. The proposal should then be presented and approved by the research and community Service unit.We are continuing innovation and excellence in teaching, research and services to communities.

With the digital revolution, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Data Science (DS) have become an important part of our lives and in society as a whole. As vast amounts of data are available in science, industry, and other organizations, skilled AI engineers and data scientists are in high demand everywhere. Artificial Intelligence and Data Science are oftentimes used interchangeably.  AI is about building intelligent systems. Successful examples of this approach include machine translation, computer vision, game playing, and self-driving vehicles. The focus of AI is on the research of new algorithms, employing current neural networks, on large datasets, to deploy and automate the whole process and AI solution to the company. Just like a data scientist, an artificial intelligence engineer can expect to research a problem, acquire the data, and find an algorithmic solution. However, AI engineers also have the added work to come up with a new algorithm and perform research to perform modeling on something that is not always prepackaged. The focus is also on deploying these models within an application and generally includes neural networks and deep learning practices.

Data science is a highly cross-disciplinary field concerned with how to extract useful knowledge from data, for deeper understanding and decision support. It is based on a blend of methods in statistics and machine learning, together with computational techniques and algorithms for handling large-scale data. In case of data science, you will then acquire the necessary data by working with people like data engineers, import your dataframe usually in a notebook, apply exploratory data analysis, feature engineering, and model comparison. Computational methods range from algorithms for collecting and handling large-scale data, statistical methods such as Bayesian modeling, to machine learning techniques such as deep neural networks are employed. Even though, there are little differences that can be underlined from requirements needed in real job descriptions of artificial intelligence engineers and data scientists, there are still plenty of similarities and overlap between the two roles and there are goals that are shared between them as well as skills, it is really up to the company to decide the requirements of each role. These differences between these two popular positions mean that there are different libraries between each role.

With a solid foundation in machine learning, and in understanding the diverse problems of AI and Data science, you will have a wide range of career opportunities to choose from such as AI Engineer, Applied AI Developer, Data Analyst Engineer, Data Scientist, Data Mining Engineer, Machine Learning Engineer, Business Analyst, Data Analyst, Digital Marketing Analyst, etc.

AI and Data science chair holds three laboratories:

1. AI and Data science lab (Ghion Building)

2. Multimedia Lab (Main Building)

3. Audio Visual Lab (CS building)
