Bahir Dar Institute of Technology, Bahir Dar University (BiT-BDU), has commenced the 12th EAI International Conference on the Advancements of Science and Technology (ICAST-2024). Running from November 1-3, 2024, the conference provides a platform for national and international researchers, engineers, and industry professionals to present and discuss innovative research findings.

Prof. Essey Kebede, Academic Vice President of BDU, in his opening remarks, highlighted the conference's role in uniting a diverse group of experts, researchers, industry professionals, and innovators from around the world. He also noted the university's significant achievement in becoming a leading institution in Ethiopia, with four engineering programs Electrical, Civil, Chemical, and Mechanical engineering ABET accreditation from the U.S. based Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology.

Dr. Mitiku Damitie, Acting Scientific Director of BiT, emphasized the importance of international conferences for higher education institutions to share and disseminate research. As he noted, BiT-BDU hosts two annual conferences—ICAST, ongoing for 12 years, and ICT4D.

Dr. Muluken Zegeye, Deputy Scientific Director for Research and Technology Transfer, highlighted BiT-BDU's role as a leading research institute committed to advancing knowledge, innovation, and practical scientific applications. He also noted BiT-BDU’s success in transforming innovative ideas into marketable products.

This year’s ICAST conference featured keynote addresses by prominent academics: Prof. Desta Mebratu from Stellenbosch University, South Africa, spoke on “Systematic Shifts for Just and Sustainable Development in Africa” Dr. Dagnachew Aklog from BiT-BDU addressed the “Water-Energy-Food Nexus in Ethiopia” and Prof. Mammo Muchie from Tshwane University of Technology, South Africa, presented on “Re-Thinking STEM for Global Sustainable Development".

ICAST-2024 is organized into seven tracks covering engineering, technology, and innovation. This year, 175 submissions were received, with 81 accepted and with 59 papers registered for presentation.
