The faculty of Mechanical & Industrial Engineering

The faculty of Mechanical & Industrial Engineering is one of the pioneers of Engineering program at Bahir Dar Technology Institute which started its journey with technical and technological trainings since the establishment of poly technique Collage in 1963. One of the main objective is to prepare knowledgeable, skilled and matured in engineering and technology through undergraduate and graduate studies;to produce problem-solving research outputs by promoting and enhancing researches focusing on knowledge and technology transfer consistent with the country’s priority needs; to strengthen and increase technological based services and supports that respond to the developmental needs of the nation through consultancy and community services; to enhance wealth creation through technological innovation and entrepreneurship.
Currently, the faculty is organized with seven chair (department) systems. The faculty is running 4 undergraduate, 8 master, and 5 Ph.D. programs. It has 95 active academic staff (2 full professors, 4 associate professors, 9 assistant professors, and 78 lecturers), and 27 technical assistants staff, and 35, on MSc study leave, 25 on Ph.D. Study leave staff. The faculty is equipped with 29 laboratories and machine shops.
Student Admission
Admissions and placements to all regular undergraduate programs are processed through the ministry until such time as the university will be allowed to enroll its students. It may also be granted to students completing their secondary education in foreign countries on the basis of equivalent academic achievements that shall be determined by the ministry. Admissions to all undergraduate continuing and distance education programs is processed through the various faculties, in consultation with the institute registrar, by considering criteria to be developed by the Academic Standards and Review Committee. The criteria shall be developed based on the framework from ministry and/or HERQA.

Program Educational Objectives (PEO)
Graduates of the mechanical engineering program are expected within a few years of graduation to have:
PEO1: Established themselves as practicing professionals in the capacity as policy makers and leaders in government and industry and/or be engaged in advanced study in mechanical engineering or a related field.
PEO2: Graduates will function effectively as an individual and as a member or leader in diverse teams and in multi-disciplinary settings.
PEO3: Graduates will have the preparation and ability to engage in independent and life-long learning in the broadest context of technological change.
Student Outcomes:
1.    An ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics
2.    An ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors
3.    An ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences
4.    An ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informal judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts
5.    An ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives
6.    An ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions and
7.    An ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies
