Dr. Mekuanint Agegnehu (PhD), Deputy Scientific Director for Research & Community Service, welcomed higher government officials including H.E Mrs. Muferiat Kemil, representatives from industry and private sectors, university top managements, and all invited guests to the Ethiopian Innovation Hub Gathering (EIHG) 2022 forum. He stated that this is the first national event to connect incubation hubs (centers) for exchanging information, experience, and practices on incubation, techno-entrepreneurship, and incubation centers, with the theme "Innovation for a brighter future.". The Forum is organized by Bahir Dar University, Bahir Dar, Ethiopia in partnership with the Deutsche Gesellschaft für International Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), GmbH implemented Sustainable Training and Education Programme (STEP) commissioned and co-financed by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and European Union (EU), the UNIDO implemented Investment for New Opportunities for Employment commissioned by the BMZ and Reach for Change.
In his welcoming speech, Dr. Bimrew Tamrat, Scientific Director of Bahir Dar Institute of Technology, stated that Bahir Dar University has made a solid step on its incubation center by producing various start-ups to remain a source of pride for the nation through excellence in education and innovation. Meanwhile, Dr. Firew Tegegne, president of Bahir Dar University, noted that the university's effort in the innovation sector has impressed all sectors. As a result, the university is attempting to foster collaboration with every relevant body on various innovation sectors in order to improve its contribution to the country's long-term development. He also mentioned that, as a result of the university's strong involvement in the incubation center, the number of graduates involved in self-employment is increasing from time to time. Her Excellency Mrs. Muferiat Kamil, Minister of Labor and Skills, commended the university as a leader in producing assets and promoting innovation, as well as what it has contributed to the country. She also promised as the government will collaborate closely with Bahir Dar University to allow massive technology to enter the market.
Following, H.E. Mr. Henok Ahmed, Strategic Advisor of the Minister for Ministry of Innovation and Technology has delivered a presentation on Innovation policy, system, model, in which he stated that the innovation sectors have become the global agenda in order to bring about a transformation toward a prosperous, inclusive, and environmentally sustainable economy. Recognizing this and aspiring to existence, sovereignty, and progress, the Ethiopian government is focusing on this area by establishing research and innovation sectors, formulating policies, and providing investment incentives.
The forum will run for two full days today and tomorrow in Bahir Dar City at Unicen Hotel, with keynote speeches, presentations, panel discussions, and networking opportunities, on the thematic areas, Relevance and impact of incubation centers, Strategies for success and sustainability, Approaches for start-up commercialization and SME establishment, Interlinking incubation centers, Empowering women's participation in entrepreneurship.
