Feed the Future Innovation Lab for Small Scale Irrigation

Faculty of Civil and Water Resources Engineering at Bahir Dar Institute of Technology in collaboration with International Water Management Institute has engaged on the development of Feed the Future innovation lab for small scale irrigation. The objective of the project is to assess the feasibility of sustainable groundwater development with the use of improved water lifting technologies for small scale irrigation in Bahir Dar Zuria and Dangila Woreda of Amhara Region.

The faculty with the facilitation of Debebe Lijalem, PhD student in Integrated Water Management, and MSc students from Hydraulic Engineering program and Economics has conducted a meeting on 14 Oct 205 with 18 farmers from Robit Bata watershed of Bahir Dar Zuria to evaluate the performance of the last year and assess the plan for this year on irrigation of tomato through Pulley and Rope Washer lifting technologies.

 During the meeting, experiences from Dangila woreda about onion production through irrigation were presented by Melaku Tesema, MSc student from Hydraulic Engineering. Tesfay Ewneti, an MSc student from the same program, presented successes and challenges of last year in Robit Bata and proposed plan for this year.

A separate group discussion with 7 women and 11 men farmers were conducted on how to purchase seedlings, nursery reparation, and conduct the irrigation.
